A Trip to Carmel by-the-Sea

Carmel By-The-Sea Itinerary

This past weekend, we traveled to Carmel-by-the-Sea in California, and it was an absolute dream come true! I have wanted to travel here for as long as I can remember and it felt like a bucket list trip!

We flew into San Jose airport (you could easily do SFO as well!) and drove straight to play golf at Half Moon Bay. This was the most incredible golf course I have ever seen, with breathtaking views every way you looked. If you have a golf lover in your life, I couldn’t recommend it more! We ate at the restaurant attached to the clubhouse right before we played golf, and I really loved the Maui wings. This is a very random recommendation, but just know that I loved them.

Carmel By-The-Sea Itinerary

The next morning, we started our drive down the coast, and it was so beautiful! There were so many farms you could stop at, and I genuinely loved the drive. If you have time and have never been to Santa Cruz before, you could go walk around the pier there as you pass it! I went and visited a friend in Santa Cruz, but you could easily go explore the beach area for fun!

As we approached Carmel, we went to see the pier in Monterey (if you have time, I’ve heard their aquarium is one of the best in the world!) and then drove straight into Pebble Beach to eat lunch at The Bench. Another great recommendation if you have a golf lover in your life! Be sure to make a reservation beforehand and then go wander around all of the shops after.

Following lunch, we drove the 17 Mile Drive along the coast and loved it! Read the brochure all along the way and learn the history and facts. Once the 17 Mile Drive is finished, you are led right into Carmel-by-the-Sea, and that’s where we stayed the night!

Friday evening, we ate at Dametra Cafe, and it was an absolute highlight of the trip. I was recommended this restaurant by a local, and it did not disappoint. I thought the Greek food was incredible, and at 8 pm, they did a giant dance party in the restaurant. Be sure to get a reservation because this was a must for me!

Saturday morning, we woke up early and started our drive into Big Sur! It is a breathtaking drive, and you’ll see gorgeous views constantly, and Bixby Bridge, etc. Be sure to stop into Point Lobos and see Whaler’s Cove, walk along the Cypress Trail, etc.

Big Sur itself is home to several state parks, and I wish we had more time to explore them all! I would’ve loved to go on more hikes, possibly spend a night in Big Sur, and explore it more. If I ever go back, I’d allot hopefully 1-2 full days to explore Big Sur. We only really had the morning!

Saturday afternoon, we grabbed sandwiches from Bruno’s and then walked around all the shops in Carmel-by-the-Sea, and I could’ve walked for hours. There were so many great shops, and I seriously need to drive a U-Haul next time because the antique shops were next level!

Saturday evening, we ate at La Bicyclette, which is where Taylor Swift ate last year! It was super delicious, and another restaurant you absolutely need to make a reservation for. I believe this is one of the harder restaurants to get into, so be sure to call them (yes, call!) once your trip is booked.

After dinner, we walked down to see the sunset on Carmel Beach, and I’ll never forget it. It was one of the most incredible sunsets I have ever seen.

Sunday morning, we went to Stationaery for breakfast, which was all over TikTok! I would make a reservation here as well and be sure to order the cinnamon roll.

I am no expert in the area, but I really loved our itinerary and would recommend it to ANYONE! My one main regret from the trip is not booking The Refuge on Saturday night after we watched the sunset. It’s a silent spa with a sauna, cold plunge, etc., up in Carmel Valley, and it is open until 10 pm! It would’ve felt incredible to end our trip in this way (especially after walking 21,000 steps on Saturday!), but it was booked when we tried calling. If you ever go, I would absolutely book it in advance to relax the night before you head home. I have heard incredible things!

Carmel By-The-Sea Itinerary

Before we drove to the airport, we went to see Mission Ranch because that was another restaurant we wanted to try, and I heard the setting was incredible! I would try to go for a Sunday brunch because I heard they have live music. Carmel Valley was also very pretty to drive around.

And that was our trip! As I mentioned previously, I am no expert, but I genuinely loved our entire trip and am so grateful we were able to do it.

Newport Beach, California Travel Guide

Newport Beach, California Travel Guide

We’ve been going to Newport Beach, California, ever since I was a little girl. I have vivid memories running on the Crystal Cove beach, splashing in the waves with my grandparents, and now it feels surreal to watch my kids fall in love with all the same places I did at their age.

I’ve traveled to Newport throughout all of the different months of the year, but summer is our favorite. It’s my version of Belly’s Cousins Beach (iykyk). Yes, it can get crowded (increasingly so in the past 10 years or so!) but it’s a great place for us to escape the Utah heat for some salty air, and we love it in July & August.

If you’ve never traveled to the area before, I am going to attach a map below so you can get familiar with the different areas. Essentially, there is Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Corona del Mar, Laguna Beach, and Dana Point from north to south. All are accessible along the Pacific Coast Highway. You can easily get to all of these different areas in a day, but this is a trip you will definitely want a rental car for!

TO STAY:

There are soo many great AirBnb’s and VRBO’s in these areas! So be sure to look on those sites as well!

Marriott Newport Coast Villas: my family has had timeshares here for about twenty years, and this is where we stay every year. It’s located up on the hill between Newport and Laguna Beach, so it’s a great central location to both “happening” areas! If you do not have a timeshare, we have found weeks on Redweek in the past.

Lido House: Will and I spent our babymoon (with June in my belly!) back in 2022 and stayed at Lido House and loved it. It’s very central to all the action in Newport and very close to the beach. They have complimentary bikes you can use and this is probably the only area I’d recommend staying in if you won’t have a rental are on the trip. There would be so much to do and see all around you that you could probably get away with no car here.

Le Petit Pali: this is a new hotel located right on Pacific Coast Highway in Laguna Beach (right across from the Montage!) and looks so adorable! I know of a couple of friends who have stayed here, and they all loved it.

*when we’ve stayed for multiple weeks the past couple of summers, we’ve stayed at our friend’s house that she rents out in the Port Streets in Newport, but 90% of the time, we are staying at the Marriott Coast Villas!

TO EAT:

We have so many food spots we love when we travel there! As with all places, I am sure there are so many places that I am missing, but here are the places we personally love to frequent while down there!

Baja Fish Tacos: (multiple locations) hands down our favorite spot! This is Will’s favorite meal on earth, and we have to go AT LEAST twice every time we go to Newport. We love their shrimp tacos the most!

Bacio di Latte (Fashion Island Mall. Newport): this gelato spot at Fashion Island Mall (Newport) is SO good! Every flavor is insane and some of the best gelato I’ve ever had

Gelato Paradiso (Laguna & Fashion Island Mall): another great gelato spot that we love! The one in Laguna is so cute

Rose’s Bakery (Corona del Mar): I dream of their chocolate croissant and California burrito

The Crab Cooker (Newport): this used to be my grandpa’s favorite restaurant and it always makes me think of him when we go there!

A Market (Newport Beach): my friend who is a local told me about this spot and we love it! Great spot to grab a quick sandwich or salad. Filled with locals inside!

C’est si Bon (Newport Beach): a great spot to grab a sandwich and pastry. You can order

Truly Pizza (Dana Point): this restaurant is viral right now and for good reason! It is truly some of the best pizza I’ve ever had. You need to make reservations about a month in advance to eat there and I don’t think they’ll seat parties over 10. We have always ordered it to-go and eaten it at the beach close by and it’s been great.

Sidecar Donuts (Newport/Costa Mesa): we always love going to grab a donut while we’re in town!

Cava (Costa Mesa): please disregard this one if you already have a Cava where you live! We don’t have any in Utah and I LOVE it so much. It’s fast casual Greek food!

Kit Coffee (Costa Mesa): try their cilantro fried rice. It sounds random but I promise you it is soo good! I’ve heard their coffee is incredible as well

Mama D’s (Newport Beach & Corona del Mar)

TruBowl (Newport Beach): my personal favorite place to grab an acai bowl! I prefer TruBowl over Banzai bowl in my personal opinion!

Bear Flag (multiple locations): this is my parents favorite spot to go to while we are in Newport! Really delicious fresh fish and poke bowls

Nick’s (multiple locations): a really popular spot!

South of Nick’s (multiple locations): similar to Nick’s but Mexican food!

Restoration Hardware (Fashion Island Mall): We went here for Will’s birthday, and it was so much fun! It is a new restaurant and is right on the roof of the mall. Definitely an experience!

Javier’s (Newport): Will surprised me with a date here on my birthday this summer and we loved it! Great view of the ocean and really delicious Mexican food

-Three Arch Beach (private beach. Need an owner to get you in)

Girls Trip to Charleston, South Carolina

All outfits from the trip are linked here!

I have really wanted to travel to Charleston for a while now, and I am so glad I made it happen. I was really toying with the idea and then kept saying no because of having to figure out someone to watch the kids, having Will adjust his work schedule, checking Penelope out of school, the current state of the economy… it all just felt like too much!

However, one day I was scrolling Instagram and saw Elise’s husband post this on her Instagram account (Elise passed away after a tragic car accident in Mexico in March), and they encouraged people to just #takethetrip if they’re ever able to. Timing will never feel perfect… so if you’re able to, just do it! I immediately felt inspired to take the time to book it and plan it and decided I was going to take my daughter Penelope with me!

Charleston South Carolina Cypress Gardens

I am actually going to lay out this blog post with what we did day by day because I personally think it was the perfect itinerary! People are saying on my TikTok videos that there’s no way I packed in this much in a day with traffic, etc., but I did! We didn’t encounter much traffic, however, that could depend on the time of year you’re going, weekend vs. weekday, etc. We traveled Tuesday-Friday (cheaper flights that way) and didn’t encounter terrible traffic! We also went May 6-9, and I felt as though the weather was absolutely incredible. I am not saying you need to follow this itinerary but it will be helpful to see how we did it!

To start, here is a Charleston Recommendation Spreadsheet filled with people’s recommendations when I asked on my Instagram account. I also added all of them to this Google Maps saved list, which you can view (and possibly duplicate and add your own?)

The spreadsheet has the top hotel recommendations, but we stayed at The Dewberry, and oh my goodness, it was such a beautiful hotel. Truly, every corner was immaculate, and I loved the entire vibe. If you don’t want to rent a car, the Dewberry has complimentary Volvos you can use (first come, first serve) for three hours at a time. However, I found renting a car to be worth it to minimize the risk of not having a car/not getting back in time, etc.

Charleston South Carolina

Day 1

We landed in Charleston around 2 pm and drove to check into our hotel, and then headed out to King Street to start exploring. King Street is absolutely incredible! There are so many shops everywhere you look and I could’ve easily spent an entire day there.

After walking around for an hour to two, we drove up to Leon’s Oyster Shop for dinner. We ordered the fried chicken and shrimp roll as well as Root Beer and milkshake. A perfect welcome to Lowcountry!

After dinner, we drove down to The Battery at sunset, which was so beautiful. The homes around that area are absolutely incredible as well!

Charleston, South Carolina

Day 2

On day two, we woke up, grabbed some Callie’s Hot Little Biscuits, and drove out to Cypress Gardens. It opens at 9 AM, so we were the first ones there and were first to get a rowboat. The grounds are beautiful, so even if you have to wait a little bit, you will be just fine.

Rowing around the trees was a bucket list item for me! It’s the same place where they filmed The Notebook, and it was truly magical. There are alligators in the water, however, the workers told me to be fearful of crocodiles, not alligators, which calmed me… a little bit.

We didn’t do much else at Cypress Gardens (the butterfly museum was a tad underwhelming), so we hopped back into the car and headed towards Isle of Palm Beach. After we swam for a bit, we headed back to the hotel to shower and change, and headed back out to Mount Pleasant to see Post House and the shops next to it. We didn’t eat at Post House, but I’ve heard it is really good! The shops next to it were fun as well and I loved their jewelry. Penelope grabbed a scoop of ice cream at the pharmacy.

After those shops, we headed over to Sullivan’s Island and walked to look at the beach, and then had reservations at The Obstinate Daughter. This was my favorite meal of the entire trip, and one you need to make a reservation for! I made our reservations two weeks in advance on Resy.

After dinner, we drove back to Charleston and parked by Rainbow Row (iconic) and walked around those streets (Broad, Tradd, Meeting etc.), which was fun to get a lay of the land. We also went to see the famous Pineapple Fountain over by the water, which was fun to walk over there as well!

Day 3

A recommendation I received a lot from people was to go see Kiawah Island. I was a little confused because most people said it was for members/residents only, but I drove over in the morning and told the gate person I was there to see The Sanctuar,y and they let me through. I know that you can also eat at Jasmine’s Porch, etc., and get through by dining there, and I wish we did that for breakfast! We just grabbed some acai bowls on our way out first thing in the morning.

The grounds were incredible and really neat to see and then we drove over to the public access beach which should be accessible here. It cost us $15 to park, but it was a fun beach to lay out at swim. These waves would be so perfect for babies and kids!

After we were done at the beach, we headed back into Charleston and ate at Lewis BBQ. This restaurant came very highly recommended, and we both LOVED it! Order the banana pudding to finish off your meal and thank me later. Close by is Hart Jewelry (if you want to make your own necklace!) and then go into the antique store next-door. So many treasures!

After our late lunch, we went back to the hotel and showered, and relaxed for a bit before heading back to walk the upper half of King Street and make our way over to dinner. We ate a Brasserie La Banque and thought it was such an enjoyable meal to end our trip with. We, of course, had to end our night with some Jeni’s Ice Cream as well! The Brambleberry is life.

Day 4

On our last day we woke up at headed over to Welton’s Tiny Bakeshop to grab some pastries and I wish I could’ve ordered one of everything! We tried the chocolate croissant and a breakfast biscuit sandwich and both were really delicious.

After breakfast, we drove down into the area South of Bread to walk and see all of the cute houses before heading back to the hotel to shower, change, and pack for our travel day back home.

On our way to the airport, we took a detour to Coastal Crust pizza and wow… if you are looking for delicious pizza while down there, go to Coastal Crust in Mount Pleasant!

Charleston, South Carolina

I know we did not get around to doing everything but I thought it was such a wonderful trip and highly recommend Charleston for a vacation of any kind!

Things we didn’t get around to doing that people recommended are all in the spreadsheet but I do wish we went to Magnolia Plantations and Garden, Boone Plantation, and if I didn’t have my daughter with me the candle making classes at Candlefish looked really fun!

As far as tours go, a lot of people recommended the carriage rides (I for some reason can’t do these because I feel bad for the horses) and the Walking Sisters Tour.

And that is about it! I hope that helps you!

-Olivia
