DEUTSCHLAND

willivia: germany
berlin doesn’t get the rep it deserves.
out of the places i have been to in europe, berlin has become one of my absolute favorites!
willivia: germany
the city is full of so much history, art, incredible architecture and some of the best food!
we had thai, italian, american, germany.. everything!
and gelato of course..
twice a day..
of course..
the drive from köln to berlin was 6 hours so when we arrived to our hotel i immediately put on my running shoes and headed out to see the city.
i was walking on a road and looked to my right and said
“hm, that looks like the berlin wall”
only to find out it WAS the berlin wall.

the museum is full of SO much history and informative information regarding germany and all the history even leading up to the wall.

willivia: germany

willivia: germany
we stood and read every word for an hour because it was all so fascinating.

willivia: germany
then we took an open air bus tour to see the rest of the city!

willivia: germany
big tear being shed for this being my last family trip before mitchell leaves!!
how is he old enough to go on a mission?!

willivia: germany
there was a street fair going on one day & of course i stopped at this haribo station for a good half hour.
they had limited edition haribo candies EVERYWHERE.
you paid by weight so you would probably feel sick if i told you how many euro’s i spent on this delicious candy.

the licorice ropes… SO GOOD.

willivia: germany
castle gardens are the best gardens.
aaaaaand i just noticed the child on the lawn unattended… ^^

willivia: germany
i think checkpoint charlie is so cute!
i love that they have kept it exactly how it was back then.
only exception is that it is now guarding a mcdonalds.
of course

no one better than kare bear

willivia: germany
this trip really has been one of the best trips of my life and i am so sad to see it coming to an end.
i loved seeing isabelle’s mission, meeting her mission president, going to her wards, eating at her members houses, seeing her apartments, eating at her favorite restaurants and seeing the places she talked about for so long.
i also loved seeing kassel and seeing where my diederich family came from.
i loved spending time with my siblings and family.
they seriously made me laugh so hard and those car rides were memories i will cherish forever.
being apart from Will was SO hard but distance makes the heart grow fonder am i right?!?!
until next year, europe!
europe

KÖLN WAS “MY CITY”

willivia: germany
in preparation for this trip.. my dad put each kid in charge of a city where we went.
that kid had to do their research on what there was to do in the city, the history, the must-sees, the best restaurants etc.
and köln was my city!!
willivia: germany

willivia: germany
obviously the number 1 stop was the cologne cathedral.
i have been to a lot of cathedrals in europe and this by FAR trumped all!
it was the tallest, most intricate cathedral i have ever seen.

willivia: germany
we visited the Lindt chocolate museum and store…
preeeeetty sure i ate my weight in chocolates that day and preeetttty sure  i am 100% happy about it.
after we left, we were probably half a mile down the road and i made my little brother turn around with me and run back so i could buy more chocolate bars
big LOL.
i have priorities okay?!

willivia: germany
we did a river cruise on the rhine river while it was raining which was fun!
neat to get the history of the city that way.

willivia: germany
i brought locks for my family to lock their love on the famous love lock bridge over the rhine river!
after you lock your love you throw your key into the river so it’s locked forever
willivia: germany
willivia: germany

willivia: germany

willivia: germany

ooooobviously gelato was on our to-do list.
their coconut gelato?

willivia: germany

willivia: germany
VISITED MY CRIB ^^

MONTH OF THE LEO

i feel like august just zoomed by!
which is scary & great all at the same time.
SCARY: time goes by way too fast. there’s no way i have already been married for almost a year!
GREAT: i saw Halloween decorations up the other day and got BIG chills!! fall is straight magic.

i can’t believe my little brother Mitchell is already done.
his farewell was amazing!
we did a fun cinnamon knot/yogurt bar after his farewell at my parents house.
cutest idea!

WHOEVER BROUGHT THESE.. ^^^
YOU’RE MY HERO.

it’s no Diederich party without my boy Craig attending!
it’s hard to explain how hard this moment is.
to hug your little brother goodbye and then watch him enter security at the airport knowing you won’t seem them again for 2 years.
it’s like we watched him until the last second possible.

it was seriously one of the hardest goodbyes.
hence my teary eyes.
his last words were classic Mitch;
“i feel like i’m entering the Hunger Games or somethin”
and then the next day after my tears were finally dried up i wrote him a letter and suddenly felt like i had a missionary again.
here it goes!
(i may or may not have been in traffic school when this letter was written…. :/ )
on a happier note:
for Will’s birthday, i took him skydiving!!
he was SOOO nervous all day long but he ended up loving it!
my best friend Karli even came along too.
it never feels real until you sign that waiver up above….

Will ended up LOVING it.
even though he boncked his head HARD entering the airplane.
cute thing is just way too tall sometimes.

another perk to my august..
PARK CITY
after my sisters wedding & sending mitchell off on his mission, my mom and dad needed park city for the week to unwind and relax.
who agrees that park city is always the best place to be in the summertime!
it is a little bit cooler up there and just the most charming atmosphere.
i seriously love it!

i bought a new Rifle Paper print and I’m smiling big big big every time i see it

and lastly, Google Fiber has teamed up with Downtown Provo and we are attempting to break a world record!
SO if you live in Utah, come!!
Details here: Passport to Provo

oh and this is waaaay besides the point of this post and not AUGUST at all but i got more pics from this shoot and wanted to share some of my faves!

okay goodnight.

SEEING MY ROOTS

willivia: germany
our last two stops have been two of isabelle’s areas she served in.
bremen & kassel!

willivia: germany
bremen was filled with farmers markets, the best italian food and lots of castles.

willivia: germany
vapiano’s  is the best italian!
willivia: germany

willivia: germany

willivia: germany
hahahahahahahhaa

willivia: germany

willivia: germany
touching the donkeys foot for good luck…
and laughing because it looks like we are dating.
willivia: germany

willivia: germany

willivia: germany
this is a real pirate ship that they serve pancakes out of now!!!
how fun is that!

willivia: germany

willivia: germany

willivia: germany
during our drives, we loved reading Fitz’s journal (my great-grandpa).
he wrote about their everyday life, their experiences with the church, his work life, his kids and everything else about the war while they were living in west germany.
on our first day in germany, my dad called my grandpa and said,
“you have got to get over here.. this is a trip you don’t want to miss.”
so what did they do?
booked the next flight out.

willivia: germany
after church on sunday my grandpa took us to the street he grew up on and showed us the bomb shelter he stayed in.
90% of the city of Kassel was ruined in the war by bombs so this is the door step to his newly built apartments. his house was completely bombed.

willivia: germany
those holes you see in the bomb shelter were the only breathing holes for all of the residents staying in the bomb house.
this is where my grandpa developed his lung disease from being in such tight corridors with so many other people carrying various diseases.

willivia: germany
the first night my grandpa slept in kassel on this trip, my grandpa woke up in the middle of the night crying because he thought he heard bombs dropping and felt like he was in the war again.
how heartbreaking is that!!

willivia: germany
his stories touched me so deeply.
i loved hearing how his family handled everything handed to them and how strong they are because of it.
they were able to get visas and  journey to america in 1950.
willivia; germany

willivia: germany
one night he remembers rushing from his apartment to the bomb shelter and forgot his shoes.
he ran across complete shards of glass and got into the bomb shelter to see that his feet weren’t sliced an inch.
he knew that was one of the many miracles that happened to him and his family.
each of his 5 siblings are all alive today with families in utah and still strong in the church!

willivia: germany

willivia: germany

willivia: germany
my family is starting to REALLY make fun of me because every time i see these fields of flowers i scream.
they are SO pretty!!!
my grandpa finally made my dad pull over the car so he could get a picture of me in them.
and probably in hopes i would shut up every time i saw them.

willivia: germany

willivia: germany
off to Köln, Germany!
birthdays

CABO part dos.

it was also so much fun to be in Cabo for my birthday!
Will bought me the most WONDERFUL ski coat last week in Park City for my birthday so I seriously wasn’t expecting anything too extravagant whatsoever.
but then after he took the above picture to Instagram on my b-day…
he takes me down to the nicest restaurant our hotel has to offer!!
i had been secretly wanting to eat there the whole trip but knew it was expensive so i just ignored the thought of even going there.
so i was THRILLED!
but then the waiter says follow me and starts leading us away from the restaurant.
i got all confused and looked at Will… he had this little cute smirk on his face.. and i instantly knew he was up to something
so then i looked down and saw this

a private dinner on the beach all set up for us!!

and the food?
DEEEELICIOUS!

the waiter INSISTED we get this eggplant appetizer and Will and I insisted that we DID NOT..
but he literally WOULD NOT leave us alone about ordering it (got quite awkward actually…) so we did and we LOVED it!
i guess it’s always good to try new things right?!

okay and here is the ABSOLUTE HIGHLIGHT OF IT ALL
while we were eating, we see these workers CRUISE onto the beach on their ATV’s…
our waiter told us to go look because all of these baby turtles JUST BARELY hatched and were about to go out to the ocean for their first time!
dead serious. top 10 most magical things i have ever seen.
i felt like i was on the discovery channel.
or nature channel.
or whatever channel something like this would be on.

they were sooooo cute!!!
and so was he.
he was just as cute as the baby sea turtles.

on our second to last day we went and wandered around Medano Beach.
it was definitely a fun atmosphere but the PARTY SCENE.
all of these bars right on the beach with drinking contest, beer pong, smoking etc..
and since Will and I don’t drink alcohol we partied hard with our mangoes!!
aaand then left after 5 minutes because we would rather hang at our relaxing pool than party ANYDAY.
are we grandparents? yep.

i  already miss being with Will 24/7

and the nachos. i really do miss those a lot too.
overall Cabo was the BEST trip.
very needed.
very relaxing.
PERFECT vacation spot.
now back to reality! 🙂

OUR FRIDAY NIGHT

this weekend i didn’t have work for like the first time since i started working at Google.
i felt like i could make any plan in the world yet all i truly wanted to do was relax with Will and do whatever plan came our way.
we were supposed to go camping but due to the rain we just went to Porcupine grill and dived straight into their nachos that are 5 feet tall.
after dinner, we pulled in to the driveway at the cottage and just sat there deciding what we were going to do next.
Will brought up every activity possible…
“Tennis!”
“Movies!”
“Redbox!”
“Go get ice cream!”
then as I was drinking my water bottle he shouted..
“Skinny dipping!”
I don’t know WHY I thought that was so funny but I ended up splurting the water all over him while hysterically laughing.
he then proceeded to grab a huge water bottle in the back seat and spray it all over me in revenge.
we honestly sat there laughing for 15 minutes.
so the question stands…
are we 5 years old?
or in our twenties?
IDK.
i love will

SIX

i love April 25th for 2 reasons..
first because it’s the “perfect” date. it’s not too hot & not too cold. all you need is a light jacket!
hahahaha if you don’t know where that is from you probably think im straight up crazy.
and 2. because it means I have been married half a year!
half a year? seriously?
I can’t even believe it!
ohh what I would give to be with Will today!
I can’t help but smile every time I think of that fall day.
it seriously was the best day of my whole life!! !
we were lucky enough to be featured on swooned magazine last week and I loved re-telling my wedding day to the editors.
every second of it was just the happiest moments of my life.

I truly can’t explain how grateful I am for every person who supported us and helped us celebrate our marriage!!
so here’s to six months!
and the happiest i’ve ever been.
mexico

CABO part uno.

Will came home from his mission in August of 2012. Those two years in Argentina were hard and poor Will hasn’t had a clear break since he came home!
He started Fall semester the week after he came back from Argentina and then left Spring semester to sell for Vivint all last summer before we got married.
Then we were married in the middle of Fall semester and he studied our whole entire honeymoon for a Physiology and Organic Chemistry test… way fun, right?
THEN he took accelerated Physics 1 & 2 this entire past summer!
So after I found out that he had a break between summer and Fall semester I knew we just HAD to get away.
So I booked Cabo!
A vacation I have ALWAYS wanted to take.
the whole entire trip was a complete dream.
it started off with Will & I flying first class…
trust me, we didn’t book first class!
but Will was so nice to the flight attendant she upgraded us, no questions asked!
so glad i have the nicest husband because i can’t complain about these perks!!
once we arrived in Mexico, our first stop was our Hotel restaurant to eat some chips & fresh guacamole.
we stayed at the Hilton and it was probably my favorite hotel I have ever stayed at.the atmosphere, service, pools, beach, amenities… all amazing.

that ^ was my first & ONLY Coke Light of entire the trip.
blah! that stuff is naaaasty.
it’s all about real Coca Cola in Mexico!
just happy to be here. happy to be alive.. ya know.
aaaand then we jumped in the ocean as soon as possible

on our first day we went and explored Cabo San Lucas!
i could walk around these Mexican streets all day long.
THE USA NEEDS TO GET ON THEIR PAINTED WALL GAME!

in downtown Cabo, we ate lunch at the most darling restaurant, Mi Casa.

i would highly recommend it!

i was giddy as ever when i found my new favorite shirt next to my new favorite wall!
am i the only one completely obsessed with this color of blue?

our second and third days were spent snorkeling & visiting Lovers beach.

look how clear that water is!!
neuptunes finger

how neat is this?
this is the most southern rock of ALL Baja California!
just a little rock peeking out in the ocean.
am i the only one that wonders hoooow in the world that rock got there in that specific place?
geology guys. it’s the real deal.

the glass water boats are amazing because they just take you around all the rocks!
if you are on a fishing boat little sea lions come up on the deck of the boat to get fish!
it’s INCREDIBLE

does snorkeling count as a hobby?
because if it is.. snorkeling is my new favorite hobby.

Lover Beach is always calm and the snorkeling is PERFECTION.
however, the other side of the beach is called DIVORCE BEACH.
where the waves are intense, dangerous and you aren’t even allowed to swim over there!
i found it absolutely hilarious.

i wish words could adequately express how good these mangoes are…
easily, hands down, clearly, confidently i can say these are the absolute BEST mangoes i have ever inhaled.i bought one from every person selling one.

straight up heaven on a stick.

when we weren’t exploring the city, we were reading & relaxing poolside.
those poolside dinners never disappoint.

DEAR MCDONALDS IN THE USA: GET THESE
Will & I each had 2 of these EVERYDAY..
who’s mad?

aaaaahhhhhh……….

HOME OF THE HAMBURGER

willivia: hamburg
hamburg, germany
home of the first hamburger!
and home of my new favorite place!

willivia: hamburg
actually it’s not fair for me to say that..
because every german city i am going to is becoming my new “favorite” place ever.
today we went to a little, old city that definitely stole my heart.
every street had cobblestone, every bush was full of flowers and every corner had a bakery.
what’s better?
they even had a farmers market going on.
fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, flowers, olives, bread…even homemade noodles!
i was in heaven.
AND THEY HAD SAMPLES!
it was like costco x29308

FEB IS FAB

ya don’t worry i already hate myself for that post title.

BUT i have absolutely loved February.
we babysat the Gochnours dog, Duke, while his family was away and it was a dream.
i have never been a dog person until this little ball of sunshine spent the weekend with us.
consider me the newest dog lover!
with William getting sick twice (first time with a virus and second time with an infection) i have loved being able to serve him so much.
(sorry for quite the dramatic pic)
but i loved comforting him
waking myself up every hour to make sure he was still breathing
 taking his temperature
running to 7-11 to get him the straws he likes
driving to different stores in search of the certain gatorade he loves
and forcing him to eat at least one piece of bread a day.
it definitely made me feel lucky i had Will in my life..
life without him would be no life at all.

I’ve been on a “new recipe” kick all month! I am attempting to try a new recipe once a week.
One of my favorites was the YUMMIEST homemade hummus!
I will never buy hummus again. It’s far too easy to just make it myself.

so here’s to better health..
and not being depressed that Duke isn’t roaming around our cottage 🙁
